Aurélia Durand’s Silk Scarf: A Wearable Declaration of Joy

More than an accessory, Aurélia Durand’s Cosmic Queen scarf is a piece of wearable art — alive with rhythm, colour, and intention. Printed on 100% silk twill (14 mommes) with hand-rolled hems and produced in Lyon, France, it honours the legacy of French carrés while carrying a distinctly contemporary African sensibility.

For Durand, who has built a visual language rooted in joy and movement, this scarf is a way of extending her world beyond the page.

"Through this project, I wanted to reimagine the codes of luxury: to create something elegant and timeless, yet infused with my own world of color, rhythm, and empowerment. It’s my way of saying that luxury can be inclusive, joyful, and bold."

A bold, joyful luxury

Durand speaks often about joy as a form of resistance — and in Cosmic Queen, that philosophy becomes tactile. The generous proportions, the saturated palette, the bold linework: everything about this scarf signals presence. It brings art into daily life in a way that is at once expressive, elegant, and intentionally uplifting.

At its core, the scarf is a declaration — of creativity, of colour, of self-possession.

"When someone wears this scarf, I want them to feel seen: to carry a story of strength and beauty that transcends cultures."

Heritage, afrofuturism and movement

Durand’s visual universe draws from African textiles, ancestral patterns, and the optimism of Afrofuturist aesthetics. In Cosmic Queen, those references meet the fluidity of silk — a medium that transforms illustration into movement.

As the scarf drapes, folds, and shifts, the artwork comes alive. It becomes a companion rather than an object — something that carries warmth and cultural memory while remaining resolutely modern.

"In this scarf, you can see echoes of African wax patterns, filtered through my own digital, graphic language, which represents a bridge between tradition and modernity, between memory and imagination."

Crafting with intention

Behind the joy is intention: a desire to create objects that hold emotional resonance, not just visual appeal.
The Cosmic Queen scarf "embodies everything I stand for", says Durand.

"My art is about reclaiming narratives and creating images where everyone can see themselves. This scarf carries that philosophy: it’s a vibrant declaration of identity."
